Overview
Beyond Shattered Honor is a research-driven multimedia project exploring honor killings in Iran through photography, video, sound, and installation art.
Originally developed as my MFA thesis, the project combines traditional Iranian cultural symbolism with contemporary visual storytelling to examine gender-based violence, systemic injustice, and collective memory.
The accompanying digital platform extends the project's narrative beyond the physical exhibition, creating an accessible space for documentation, awareness, and reflection.
The Challenge
How might creative technology transform complex social issues into meaningful visual experiences while preserving human dignity?
Honor killings are often documented through fragmented news reports and statistics, leaving individual identities overshadowed by violence.
My challenge was to communicate these stories through an emotionally engaging yet ethically responsible multimedia experience.
Research & Creative Direction
My process began with researching documented cases, Iranian legal frameworks, and cultural representations of gender-based violence.
I translated these findings into a visual narrative built around three principles:
Visibility: Restore individual identities through photography and personal documentation.
Memory: Transform names, materials, and cultural symbols into acts of remembrance.
Engagement: Use multimedia storytelling to connect research with emotional and critical reflection.
Creative Technology & Experience
The installation integrates transparent photographic portraits, video projections, sound, sculptural elements, and traditional Iranian objects.
A wooden mihrab, burial shroud, Persian rug, and hand-burned names create a symbolic environment exploring absence, memory, and resistance.
The website extends this experience into a digital format, connecting the physical artwork with its research and documentation.
Outcome & Impact
Exhibited at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art in May 2024, Beyond Shattered Honor evolved from an academic research project into a multidisciplinary storytelling experience.
By combining physical installation, digital media, and visual communication, the project demonstrates how creative technology can support cultural preservation, social awareness, and meaningful public engagement.
Reflection
This project shaped my approach to creative technology and human-centered storytelling.
It reinforced the importance of designing experiences that go beyond aesthetics—using research, visual communication, and emerging media to make complex subjects more accessible while maintaining ethical responsibility.
